Spied: BMW 3 Series GT chassis fully unveiled

GermanCarForum brings forward a spy photo of the BMW 3 Series GT chassis sitting on the assembly line at a BMW plant. The image simply shows the skeleton of the 3er Gran Turismo, but it gives us an early look at the sleek roofline (far better than the 5 GT) and the overall proportions. The roof slopes down at the rear, but instead of a larger glass area as in a Touring, there is an additional quarter light and a wrap around tailgate. The rear end is a combination of Touring and a Shooting Brake.

BMW 3 Series GT will come to market in March 2013 and will come with a hatch as seen on the 5 GT and raised ride height. The car has a high belt line that completely wraps around the car, therefore allowing the roof to be lower and sleeker.

The engine options are inherited from the 3 Series Sedan, with a 335i GT top model. All will be mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. With the new 3 Series Touring coming to the U.S. as well, it remains to be seen if BMW will offer the Gran Turismo version to American customers.

BMW is expected to debut the 3 Series Gran Turismo, in concept form, at this year’s Paris Auto Show.
